A Win-Win Solution To The Dilemma Regarding Perishable Goods

I am truly thankful to be among the 50 participants in today’s business seminar held in our town.  The lecture was around 60 minutes, and yet very informative.  I was surprised when it ended, and wished we had another 60 minutes more.

Aside from the fact that it was absolutely informative… they didn’t try to sell us anything.  And it did not turn out to be a networking orientation.  I was hesitant at first, because I was concerned the seminar might turn into a networking presentation.  I still went, because I figured there is always something new to discover.  There is always an opportunity and blessing.  So I was thankful I did go.  And I was glad it wasn’t a networking presentation.  And it did turn out to be the seminar it promised to be.

The speaker went by his business name “Professor X”, so I am unable to properly credit him.  I had a million questions in mind, though there was one that stood out the most.  And I was glad to have the opportunity to know his thoughts on the matter.

The one thing that bothers me so much about selling is something I have been cosmically broadcasting through FB for a couple of years now.  And I think Professor X gave a very wise advice.

I asked him about perishable goods.  It has been the biggest issue among fruit and vegetable vendors.  And it breaks the heart of #plantbase people #vegans #rawfoodists #fruitarians whenever we see tons of unsold produce being thrown away every week.

And his “extra tip” is something I think a lot of businesses can learn from… regardless of what your product is.  I think it is something that can be applied to any kind of product that winds up “not being sold”.

And that is:  Donate them.

Such that you can donate them to charitable institutions or non-government units.

And if you think about it… to a certain extent, you can even donate to your community.

If you truly wanna do something about it, and avoid having to throw away unsold goods… donating is one of the best things you can do.

It brought to mind a similar strategy, which certain kinds of businesses do apply.

I am aware that there already are food businesses that use a similar strategy.  “Similar” because the idea is the same, though it’s not exactly what we think of about donations.

For instance, some food places would give away or sell (with a huge discount) any food left at the end of the day to their employees.  A couple of years ago, there were at least one or two local bakeries that sell all perishable products at half the price by the strike of 5/6PM.  And anything else left (if there actually is anything left)… they would give away to their employees… or sell to their employees at an even bigger discount.

That way, they can get all products sold by the end of the day.  And sell fresh products daily.

Win-win for all.

I think that is a very sound advice for many businesses these days.

And it did bring to mind many other potential ideas, especially when it comes to perishable food products.

And even if your product is not a perishable food, I think that if your product is something others can greatly benefit from… such as clothes, shoes, bags… and they remain unsold no matter what you do to get them off the shelf… consider donating.

If you’ve already done discounts and raffles and all kinds of gimmickry… give donating a chance.

It might sound mind-blogging for those who insist on earning even a centavo from unsold goods.  Though honestly, I find “donating” as very sensible and wise.

Thank You

God Bless Always
